SHEBOYGAN, WI Kris Shepard, former co-owner and president of Alsip Home & Nursery, has assumed ownership of Caan Floral & Greenhouses from Tom Caan, who will remain an employee of the company. The financials of the sale are undisclosed. Shepard, who serves on Garden Centers of America's (GCA) Leadership Council as President, says he has "many new ideas" for his new business and will continue its focus on growing quality plants, providing outstanding customer service and educating customers. Caan, whose family owned the business since 1984, will aid Shepard in the transition, and the core employee base will remain in tact, according to the company.

Shepard recently sat down with IGC Retailer magazine in an exclusive interview for next issue's cover story on Alsip, ranked No. 29 in the IGC 100 report with $18 million from two stores. He says, during his tenure with Alsip, he had hoped to one day be the sole proprietor of a garden center, but had not been actively seeking an opportunity until an industry contact called with the lead about Caan last spring. "One thing led to another, and I kept walking down the path," Shepard says. "I wasn't looking to leave Alsip until I got that phone call. Alsip has been very great to me. I was there 20 years and a few months." He continues, "I'm still going to maintain a great relationship with everyone there. A big part of my heart will always be with them."

Richard Christakes, Alsip's CEO, supports Shepard in his new venture: "Kris had an opportunity. He has our blessing, and we're behind him."
